Auckland Aces face off Canterbury Kings in the championship clash at this year’s Super Smash. Both teams know how crushing it would be to have a championship victory snatched away, despite having come so close.
The Auckland Aces came second best in their most recent final (in 2019-20), but it’s a heart-breaking, so-near-yet-so-far story for the Canterbury Kings, who fell at the final hurdle three times on the bounce (20-21, 21-22 and 22-23).
The Kings put up another solid campaign for their fourth straight final appearance, but it wasn’t without a struggle. The Kings had to duke it out with the Firebirds in the elimination final, where a late cameo from Matt Henry helped them get over the line after they were in a desperate situation needing 52 runs from 29 balls with just 4 batters to go.
The Aces, however, were in control throughout the round robin stages and finished at the helm, making a beeline to the grand finale.

Canterbury Kings beat Auckland Aces by 8 wickets
63/1 in 16.1
The Auckland Aces fancy playing against the Kings from Canterbury, and it shows in their dominant winning record against this opposition. At 23-13, the Aces have clearly aced the Kings since the beginning of the domestic T20 back in 2005-06, and the men from Canterbury haven’t been able to bridge the gap.
The Kings took a big step in that direction, however, winning four games in a row against the Aces, but the Auckland men finally found a way to break their losing streak last season. And, the Aces went a step beyond with two thumping victories in home and away fixtures this season.
Uncapped batsmen Cam Fletcher, Sean Solia, and Robert O Donnell are the backbone of the batting order for Auckland, with several capped batsmen like Finn Allen, Jimmy Neesham unavailable due to national duty. With nearly 530 runs between them, this batting trio will be aiming to take the Aces to an above par score on the final day so they can apply pressure on the Kings line-up.
Uncapped bowlers Danru Ferns (18 wickets at 10.6 SR) and Louis Delport (14 wickets at 13.2 SR) have unsettled batsmen from several teams with their raw pace, but NZ bowler Ben Lister, who’s taken 13 wickets at 13.3 strike rate ), has been miserly with the ball giving just 6.4 runs on average per over. Other than their defeats to lower ranked teams, they looked great as a team this season, and will be now eyeing a record fifth title by taking full advantage of the home conditions in the final.
Finn Allen, Sean Solia, Cole Briggs, Robert ODonnell (C), Cam Fletcher (wk), William O Donnell, Ryan Harrison, Jock McKenzie, Danru Ferns, Louis Delport, Ben Lister.

A last-ball victory against the Firebirds in the elimination final at Hamilton meant the Kings snuck through to another final, their fourth in succession. With that, they move to the second place on the list for teams with most appearances in the grand finale, with only Auckland Aces ahead. One win in six appearances shows that Kings have been poor at converting final appearances into title wins.
Perhaps the pressure of the occasion gets to them and they are unable to keep their composure especially during the big moments. But a nervy, tense elimination final win against a team like Firebirds could give enough belief and confidence for them to go all the way through this season. Chad Bowers up top, Cole McConchie and Mitchell Hay in the middle, and Matt Henry lower down the order came good with the bat to wrap up the chase. Zakary Foulkes led the charge with the ball, picking up three important wickets including in-form Wellington batter Rachin Ravindra. Matt Henry went for runs and Ish Sodhi wasn’t at his economical best, but Kyle Jamison and William O’Rourke put the brakes on, not allowing the Firebirds to get away to a huge total.
When you look closer at the Kings’ record in the finals, you’ll agree that they’ve been too unfortunate to not add to their solitary championship win in the inaugural New Zealand domestic T20 way back in the 2005-06 season. Nothing materialized in their subsequent five appearances in the final, three of which came in the last three seasons. But they’ll be hoping to get out of the rut and end their trophy drought this Sunday.
Chad Bowes, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Cole McConchie (c), Mitchell Hay (wk), Bevon Jacobs, Zakary Foulkes, Kyle Jamieson, Ish Sodhi, Matt Henry, William ORourke.

The forecast is not all too encouraging, with considerable cloud cover and a decent chance of rain predicted for most part of the game. With the conditions favouring the ball, batsmen will do well to get their eye in before going after the bowlers. A rain-curtailed game, will bring in a different dynamic with the batsmen taking the bowling apart.
The Eden Park at Auckland will be hosting this big dance. The Aces have locked horns with the Kings here thrice, with the Aces winning two times and the Kings once.
Auckland Aces believe their best shot at victory would be to win toss, bat first and put a huge score on board to push the Kings on the backfoot. They won all their 4 titles defending a score, and wouldn’t want to play with that strategy much. The overhead conditions will also influence which way they’ll go after winning the toss.
Canterbury Kings met Auckland Aces at the adjacent venue in the final of the first ever T20 domestic competition, back in 2005-06, and the Kings were crowned as champions. But the Aces look too strong with all bases covered. Auckland Aces to trump Canterbury Kings.
