Sydney Sixers pipped Melbourne Renegades in their opening game the other night and look to keep the march going by defeating the Hobart Hurricanes who’re looking to get their tournament underway with a win. It’s a real contrast; one side is missing star players in Steven Smith and Mitchell Starc who’re going to be away on national duty for a while now, while the other side just got a few players come in after a 5 match T20 series against Team India.
With a 3-2 head to head record in the last 5 games they’ve met, Sixers have the edge over Hurricanes, but only just. They will come charging into the match with confidence eyeing another win over Sixers so they can move clear and keep the record going. Will Hobart Hurricanes be able to peg them back? Or will Sixers march on to pick up the second win on the trot? We’ll see.

Hobart Hurricanes narrowly missed out on making to the finals. With Tim Paine retiring, Joel Paris and D’Arcy Short leaving, the squad looked a touch unsettled, but they’ve put out a new squad with several talented individuals, Reinforcements to batting and bowling have added depth to their squad, with almost all their bases covered. Four players from the squad featured in the T20s against India, namely Matthew Wade, Ben McDermott, Nathan Ellis and Tim David. And there’s no doubt they’ll go further in this tournament considering the high-quality list of players they’ve got.
Matthew Wade and Ben McDermott are set to open, followed by Caleb Jewell, Sam Hain, and big-hitting Tim David. They’ve got some good all-rounders in the mix too in Corey Anderson, Mitch Owen, Nikhil Chaudhary and Chris Jordan who can provide some lusty blows with the bat later on in the innings. Their bowling looks sharp with Nathan Ellis, Riley Meredith, Liam Guthrie, Billy Stanlake forming the pace battery, while leggie Peter Hatzoglou takes care of the spin department.
When you’ve got such a squad at your disposal, it would be a huge miss not to make it through to the finals. Hobart Hurricanes will go in to the first match hoping they’ll reach the finals this time having come agonizingly close to qualifying last year.
Matthew Wade(C/wk), Ben McDermott, Caleb Jewell, Sam Hain, Tim David, Corey Anderson, Chris Jordan, Nathan Ellis, Riley Meredith, Paddy Dooley, Peter Hatzoglou.

Sydney Sixers start as favourites in yet another BBL edition. They didn’t go the whole way after being bundled out for less than a 120 on the big stage in the Challenger finals but they’ll be raring to go again to have another shot at the trophy. Several seasons might have gone by, but Sixers for some reason have always been legit contenders for the cup every single time.
Having retained the core group of players for yet another season, the Sixers now look a well-rounded squad with a solid bowlers and batters in the mix. The return of Tom Curran after his injury is great news for the bowling department which also comprises of Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis. The spinning stocks look good with Steve O’Keefe rocking his left arm spin and another talented Afghani in the circuit Izharulhaq Naveed ready to send down his sharp leggies.
Although Steve Smith opened in the first match and helped himself to a man of the match performance, international duties will keep him out of action in the BBL but James Vince is a capable replacement. James Vince, Josh Philippe and Daniel Hughes make a potent top 3, while the middle order looks decent with captain Moises Henriques, Jordan Silk, Jack Edwards in there. As challengers for the title, Sydney Sixers always find a way to make an impact with the team they get, and this time it’ll be no different.
Josh Philippe (wk), James Vince, Daniel Hughes, Moises Henriques (C), Jordan Silk, Jack Edwards, Tom Curran, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Steve O'Keefe, Izharulhaq Naveed.

The pitch and conditions here suit the pacers more than spinners. Quicks who can bend their backs and bowl into the surface have come away successful here, so the pitch is expected to offer some assistance to pace bowlers.
The match is played at the Launceston’s Aurora stadium, where Hobart Hurricanes have managed to pick up a couple of wins last season- against eventual finalists Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat.
The team winning the toss will bat first and hope to cash in when the pitch is fresh and the conditions are good for batting. Runs on the board will always prove to be a challenge here at this ground, which has favoured teams batting first.
Both the teams are ready to put the jerseys on and take on yet another challenge that BBL has to offer. Sixers started with a win, and Hobart Hurricanes will walk into this game looking to a win. A line-up full of stars gives team Hobart a clear advantage over their counterparts from Sydney, who are now going to have to chop and change their XI with Steve Smith leaving for national duty.
We are backing Hobart Hurricanes as the winners of this contest.
