Defending champions Lahore Qalandars have had a shocker of a season. They came into the tournament hoping to replicate their heroics of last season, but they never played like one. They lost a string of matches, first six to be precise, and were running the risk of going through a whole season without any win to show for it, when their fixture vs Peshawar Zalmi had to be called off without a ball bowled. But, in their eighth outing, they showed glimpses of what they were able to achieve last season with a wonderful team display that saw them defeat Islamabad United by 17 runs. Shaheeh Shah Afridi scored some useful lower order runs to take their team to a respectable score, and picked up a couple of wickets to set United batsmen from chasing down the total. Zaman Khan, who picked up four wickets, and Rassie Van Der Dussen, who scored 64 off 44 earlier, contributed to the lone win of the Qalandars in a season that has left the players wondering ‘if only’ or ‘what could have been’. A string of losses early on in the competition means even a win in the final fixture would not help be enough for them to avoid being the wooden spoon holders. And what a fall it would be- from the top one season to the bottom the next.

But, luckily for them, they’re in a position where they don’t have to deliberate much about the NRR or figure out the different possible scenarios. They have two games in hand, and a win in each will take them to 13 points, guaranteeing them a place in the knockouts. What’s interesting is, though, that they’d be facing the bottom-ranked Qalandars first and the table-toppers Multan Sultans in their final fixture of the regular group stages. They’ll need their top run-getters Jason Roy and Saud Shakeel to fire, and other players namely Shane Rutherford, Khawaja Nafay and Rilee Rossouw have to work up some form and find a way to contribute. The Gladiators are where they are, thanks to some impressive bowling by their spin dup Abrar Ahmed and Akeal Hosein, who have 25 wickets between them.
