One of the newcomers to the Legends League Cricket T20 tournament, Konark Suryas Odisha couldn’t have dreamt of a better start to their campaign. They prevailed over defending champs Manipal Tigers in a low scoring thriller and added two crucial points to their tally.
The draw of the tournament sees them lock horns with Tigers again, this time in the city of Surat in Gujarat.
Tigers will seek revenge for the loss last week and look to get even with the Konark Suryas. The fast-paced schedule of this tournament means the matches come thick and fast and Manipal Tigers having lost the opening encounter cannot afford another slip up if they’re serious about defending their title and doing it well.

In a tournament like the LLC T20, it’s important to start the campaign off on a winning note. And Konark Suryas Odisha did just that, although it was not a clinical performance.
Put in to bat, the Odisha openers Richard Levi and Ambati Rayudu couldn’t quite work out the pitch and left the team reeling at 20/2 in the third over. Irishman Kevin O Brien had a rough outing as well, and it came to Ross Taylor and the Pathan brothers to steady the ship and take the team to a respectable score. Despite two of them getting to two figures, they couldn’t carry on with the job and the team was reduced to 87/8 in the 19th over. Thanks to some lusty blows from the willow of Navin Stewart and Vinay Kumar, they finished their innings with a bit of a momentum on their side.
105 was never going to test the defending champs, but Konark Suryas bowlers went back to basics and kept things neat and tidy on a wicket that assisted their style of bowling. Shahbaz Nadeem and Dilshan Munaweera made the ball talk with some wonderful spin bowling, whereas ex RCB player Vinay Kumar and Ben Laughlin took the pace off and bowled challenging lines and lengths to test the batsmen.
Team Odisha will go back to mixing up the pace and bowling variations to challenge the defending champs on this surface, as well.

Manipal Tigers would be livid with themselves at missing out on an easy opportunity to win and collect two points. They had Konark Suryas Odisha on the mat at the halfway mark, after keeping them down to a way below par score of 104.
However, the Tigers batting unit never took the game on and played with intent. Lack of clarity in of how the batting group wanted to carry on batting after the early setback in the innings clearly cost them the match.
But champion sides generally don’t take a lot of time to correct their mistakes and regroup, so we expect Manipal Tigers to make amends for their errors in the previous encounter pretty quickly. They’ve got some lovely match-winners in their own right in Robin Uthappa, Asela Gunaratne, Daniel Christian and Harbhajan Singh. Plus, they’ve got a good mix of pinch-hitters, bowling all-rounders, pacers that can swing the ball nicely and spinners that can put the brakes on opposition scoring freely.
They could point out many things that went well for the team in their agonizing defeat in the first game, but one thing that totally broke down was their approach to the chase. Their batsmen showed no application to the conditions and failed to break down the target into several mini targets, botching up the chase.

With the pitch likely to assist batters, we have a high-scoring game on the cards. 253, 223 and 187 were the top three scores batting first last season, and 211, 193 and 178 were the three highest scores chasing. Bowlers are not going to enjoy bowling on the decks here, where batsmen usually get full value for their shots. We have got good news from a weather perspective, with clear skies and a low chance of rain.
Lalabhai Contractor Stadium, Surat will be hosting this encounter between these two teams. Manipal Tigers will have fond memories of this ground, where they lost the Qualifier 1 to Hyderabad but went on to lift the trophy defeating the same team in the final. Tigers have lost one and won two in this venue.
Teams batting second have barely been in trouble going about their chase in the first leg at Jodhpur, but it would be interesting to see whether a similar ploy pays dividends in Surat. Captain winning the toss is likely to lean towards chasing for it offers a chance to assess the conditions on offer and to work out a clear plan to chasing the total down.
Manipal Tigers will fancy their chances of getting even with Odisha on their favourite venue. Their bowling almost set up the victory restricting Odisha to a below par total, only for their batters to collapse and make a mess of the chase but they’ll be hoping to be more ruthless this time around.
We are backing Manipal Tigers as winners of this contest.
