In their five meetings across two seasons, Dubai Capitals have clearly dominated MI Emirates, winning four games and losing just the odd one. Capitals have won all four group games these teams have played so far, with MI Emirates clinching the all-important eliminator last season that saw them head up to Dubai to face eventual champions Gulf Giants in the second qualifier.
Capitals will be feeling good about their dominant head to head record against the MI franchise. But MI Emirates won’t be too disappointed because they’re playing a different brand of cricket now and have been simply exceptional in the knockout matches leading into the grand finale. They’ve stacked their deep batting order with several hard-hitting batsmen, so they’ll be banking on their batsmen to deliver the goods.
Dubai Capitals will be hoping their bowlers figure out a way to keep the opposition batsmen in check while their own batters find a way to match the attacking game that their counterparts possess.

Not many teams match the mighty batting arsenal that the MI Emirates have. Their Caribbean-dominant playing XI, featuring 2 current and 3 ex Windies players, score at a frenetic pace and attack all the way through. Muhammad Waseem and Kusal Perera, the best opening pair of the tournament, have rarely failed to get their team off to a blinder.
Bolstering the middle order are power hitters Andre Fletcher, Nicky Pooran, and Tim David who’re fully invested in taking the opposition to the attack at all times even when their team is on the backfoot. They’ve got two T20 veterans Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard to finish with a flourish, who bring tons of experience in handling pressure situations and know what role they’re supposed to play in guiding their team to victory.
With Fazalhaq Farooqi departing the tournament, the onus is on Trent Boult to give the Emirates early breakthroughs with the ball. And the Kiwi rarely fails. Akeal Hosein, the lead spinner, has found an able ally in mystery spinner from Sri Lanka Vijayakanth Viyaskanth. Overall, they’re a well-rounded squad with powerful bowling and a super explosive batting line-up. And they’ll be ready to throw all they got at Capitals to make sure they lift the trophy on Saturday night.

Dubai Capitals coasted into the final with an emphatic victory over Gulf Giants in the second qualifier. That’s more indicative of a team looking to compete and win. The all-round strength of the men from Dubai was on display, as their disciplined bowling attack restricted the defending champions to a below par total before their openers mowed down the target in no time capitalizing on the fielding restrictions during the powerplay.
A thumping 9-wicket victory over the defending champions will give the Capitals a huge boost of confidence heading into the finals, and they’ll be already believing they can go all the way and lift the trophy. Gulf Giants put the Capitals off balance by asking them to chase, knowing both of Dubai’s last two wins had come batting first.
But Capitals were equal to the task. Each bowler in their attack picked up a wicket apiece and the Giants were teetering at 40/4 in the 8th over. Captain James Vince offered resistance and Chris Jordan lent a hand with a solid 30 to take them to a below-par but respectable 130-ish target. But Capitals openers Du Plooy and Tom Banton showed no mercy, tearing into the Giants bowling. They galloped to victory, chasing down the modest target with over four overs and a ball to spare.

Runs have come at a in the ILT20 this season. Not once have teams been able to breach 200 this season, but run scoring has been particularly hard at Dubai where the average scores hover between 150 and 175 in most of the matches. Bowlers have been able to extract a bit of assistance from the pitch throughout the innings, not just powerplay. The forecast for the final is pretty good so we’re in for a fitting finale to this year’s ILT20.

Average TurnThe grand finale will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Ground (DSC), Dubai. With 3 losses in 4 matches, the DSC has been anything but a hunting ground for the MI Emirates this season. Dubai Capitals, however, have a better record here, winning 4 of their 6 matches here at this venue this year including a 7-wicket victory over MI Emirates early on in the tournament.
Teams batting second have found chasing under lights a lot more advantageous. Of the 14 completed matches at Dubai this season, teams batting second have won 9 whereas teams batting first have managed five wins. Two of those five matches were nail-biters with a fine margin of victory and could have gone either way. We expect the team winning toss to elect to field first.
With four wins on the row, the momentum is clearly on the Capitals' side. Regardless, MI Emirates have several explosive batsmen who can quickly take the game away from the opposition with some relentless strokeplay. MI Emirates bowling without Farooqi might not seem to be very powerful, but with a mystery spinner in the mix, it’s got that little something that you need to win tournaments.
We are backing MI Emirates as the winners of this contest.
