New Zealand have lost four matches in a row, and their semi-final hope now suddenly doesn’t look too bright. They are still fourth on the table with 8 points, but after their defeat against Pakistan in their last match, their NRR has dropped to 0.398. New Zealand can still make it through if they beat Sri Lanka in their next match at Bangalore. Then, they will have to hope that Pakistan and Afghanistan, who also have 8 points, don’t win their final league matches by a big enough margin to overtake them on NRR. However, there is a rain threat hanging, and there is also the possibility of New Zealand's last game being washed out. If that happens, they will have only 9 points and will have to pray that Pakistan and Afghanistan lose their remaining matches to stay on 8.

New Zealand have only themselves to blame for the quandary they find themselves in. They had won their first four matches and looked all set for a semi-final berth. But losing four matches on the trot has messed up their plans. Frustratingly, they lost their match via DLS method to Pakistan even after piling on 401 on the board.
What’s hurt them is their bowling performance in the last couple of games. Injuries to key bowlers like Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry haven’t helped them, but they will be hoping to put up a much better show against Sri Lanka. If Ferguson is still unfit, the Kiwis might try Kyle Jamieson. He is a tall fast bowler, and his pace and bounce might trouble the Lankan batters.
The onus will be on Trent Boult to get some early wickets. Boult went for 50 runs in his 6 overs in the match against Pakistan without taking a wicket. However, he is too good a bowler, and we expect him to make an impact here. Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner bowled well in the last game on this wicket and should do well here as well.
One positive thing for New Zealand to come out of their last match is the return of Kane Williamson. The captain made an immediate impact with a classy 95 off just 79 balls.
The Lankan bowlers will also need to watch out against Rachin Ravindra, who is in exceptional form. The talented youngster is now among the top run-getters in the tournament, with 523 runs in just 8 innings at an average of 74.71 and a strike rate of 107.
Glenn Phillips has started to find his rhythm in the last couple of games and is hitting those big shots. If the game is reduced, the Kiwis might be tempted to send the hard-hitting batter up the order to get some quick runs.

Sri Lanka are out of the semi-final race. However, they still have something to play for. Finishing inside the top seven on the ongoing World Cup table will help them receive qualification for the eight-team ICC Champions Trophy 2025 alongside host Pakistan. Currently, the Lankans are in the eighth position, and a win here might take them to the top seven.
Sri Lanka, however, are struggling. After that humiliating 302-run loss to India, where they were shot out for 55, they went on to lose their next match against Bangladesh as well. On a great batting wicket in Delhi, Sri Lanka could manage 279 courtesy of a splendid 108 by Charith Asalanka. However, Bangladesh reached the target quite comfortably in the end.
The team will be hoping that captain Kusal Mendis delivers. After an incredible start to the tournament, his form has just fallen off. The talented batter needs to step up and take the charge.
Sadeera Samarawickrama is now the leading run-getter for the team in this World Cup, with 372 runs in 8 innings at an average of 62. He should do well on this pitch.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers have regularly let them down. Dilshan Madushanka has been their standout performer. The fast bowler is now the leading wicket-taker of the 2023 World Cup, with 21 scalps to his name at an average of 22.23.
Unfortunately, none of the other bowlers have a decent ing act and keep leaking runs. On this batting beauty of a pitch, the likes of Kasun Rajitha, Dushmantha Chameera, and Maheesh Theekshana will really need to bowl tight lines, or they are likely to be carted all over the park.

The pitch at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is a batting paradise. There is almost no lateral movement for the seam bowlers, and spinners get nothing from the pitch. Batters can almost start hitting through the line straightaway. Seamers will have to bowl plenty of off-cutters and slower ones here to stem the flow of runs.
It has been raining in Bengaluru for the last few days, and rain is expected to disrupt proceedings in the afternoon during the match. The weather will remain mostly cloudy through the day, with a couple of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
The average score batting first at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium is 265. In the last match played here, New Zealand posted a massive 401-6 after batting first here against Pakistan. Earlier in the tournament, Australia too had blasted 367 against Pakistan at this venue. So, this is without doubt a high-scoring venue, and another game with plenty of fours and sixes is on the cards. If the team batting first gets the full 50 overs, they should target a total of around 350.
Rain is expected to disrupt the proceedings in the afternoon during this match. Therefore, the team winning the toss will look to bowl first, as they will have a better shot at a smaller target if the match is reduced due to rain.
New Zealand and Sri Lanka have met in 11 matches in the CC ODI World Cup; Sri Lanka has won 6 of those, while the Kiwis have won 5. However, while New Zealand have lost their last four matches, they are still a much better all-round side than Sri Lanka. Their bating unit is in good shape and is consistently delivering. It’s their bowlers who have slipped in the last couple of games. If we get a full match here, we expect the Kiwis to put on a much more disciplined show. Moreover, New Zealand has proven to be a formidable opponent for Sri Lanka, as they haven't ed a win in their past seven ODI face-offs. With a semi-final qualification on the cards, we expect New Zealand to go all out in this match and secure an important win. The main thing remaining to be seen is if the weather deserts them again.
Back New Zealand to emerge victorious in this match.
