The new Major League Cricket (MLC) season is here, and fans are in for a month-long stretch of non-stop T20 excitement featuring the best international talent. Thursday’s curtain-raiser at the Oakland Coliseum has the San Francisco Unicorns, last year’s runners-up, going head-to-head with defending champions Washington Freedom. San Francisco Unicorns had a strong run last season, finishing second in the group stage standings before falling short in a one-sided final against Washington Freedom. This year, they’ll be hungry to go all the way, and they’ve got the squad to make that happen.
Corey Anderson leads a team packed with talent. Up top, they’ve got Finn Allen and Tim Seifert —two players capable of putting any attack under pressure. Allen and Seifert have delivered explosive starts for New Zealand in the past, and the Unicorns will be banking on more of that firepower.
Matthew Short and Hassan Khan bring depth to the batting order. Both finished among the leading scorers for the Unicorns last year, and they’ll be looking to repeat that impact this season.
Hassan isn’t just valuable with the bat, either. He topped the wicket charts for the side last year, picking up 10 at an economy rate of 7.09.
Their bowling unit has plenty of muscle. Haris Rauf brings serious pace and T20 experience, and with Liam Plunkett and Carmi le Roux around him, the Unicorns have a balanced and reliable attack.

Washington Freedom head into this MLC season with confidence after dominating last year’s competition. They finished at the top of the table with five wins from seven group games and then steamrolled their way through both the Qualifier and the final.
Most of the squad remains the same, so there’s every reason to expect another strong run from them. Steve Smith, last season's skipper, won’t be available for the first few matches as he’s tied up with the WTC final in England. He’s expected to play just two games for Washington this season. Glenn Maxwell, who stepped away from ODI cricket to put full focus on T20s ahead of next year’s World Cup, has taken over as captain and will be the standout name in a strong batting lineup.
Washington’s batting looks well-balanced with Maxwell, Rachin Ravindra, Glen Phillips, Mark Chapman, and Andries Gous in the mix. Rachin and Gous are likely to take charge early in the innings, setting the platform. Maxwell and Phillips bring the firepower through the middle. Chapman has been in good touch in the T20 format and adds depth to the lineup.
Saurabh Netravalkar is expected to lead the attack again after finishing last season with 15 wickets in seven games and an economy of 7.67. He’ll have from Lockie Ferguson and Jason Behrendorff, two experienced quicks who know how to find breakthroughs. Ravindra and Maxwell can also chip in with spin during the middle phase of the innings.

Oakland’s Coliseum, a venue used for baseball and American football since 1966, has been reworked to accommodate cricket for the MLC 2025 season. Because it's a brand-new location for the sport, there’s little available in of ground behavior or track conditions. That said, American pitches are usually a bit two-paced—batters can score well, but seamers do get some help. We’ll likely see something along those lines in Oakland, too.
The weather looks good for game day, with no rain expected and comfortable conditions forecast.
This will be the first cricket game held at Oakland's Coliseum, so there’s nothing to fall back on in of past scores. A total in the range of 180 should keep either side in the game.
With this being a brand new venue, there’s no clarity yet on whether chasing or defending will work better. In such cases, it usually makes sense to bowl first and get a read on how the surface behaves.
Washington Freedom met San Francisco Unicorns three times in last year’s MLC, winning twice—including the title match. Both teams have stuck with their main players from that campaign, adding a few new names to the mix, and look strong in most areas. The Unicorns lean heavily on their top-order batters. If that group clicks, they’ve got a real shot at knocking off Washington. That said, Washington seem more complete across departments, which makes them the smarter pick from a betting perspective.
We are backing Washington Freedom as the winners of this match.
