After rain knocked out over 23 overs of action in Dambulla on Wednesday, both sets of players, officials and ers will be hoping for a full game of ODI cricket in Pallekele on Sunday.
And after a drawn T20I series, it would be great to see 50 overs per side in this second ODI which, if won by the tourists, will setup a decider in the third and final ODI.
Sri Lanka showed their experience of local conditions in the first match of the series with two batters making centuries and New Zealand will have to learn fast ahead of this game - easier said than done considering three of their XI on Wednesday were making their ODI debuts!
We can expect a pitch which will turn for the spinners and will offer consistent but low bounce. As such, it could be another tough day at the office for the pace bowlers.

Sri Lanka have built a strong group of batters and that was shown in the first match of the series when even with Pathum Nissanka contributing only 12 runs at the top of the order and Kamindu Mendis not even coming to the wicket at number seven, they were still able to post 324.5 from 49.2 overs.
Avishka Fernando made a century alongside keeper-batter Kusal Mendis who top scored with 143 and currently holds the honour of the leading run scorer in international cricket in 2024!
After struggling to break the opening partnership, the bowlers then ran through the rest of New Zealand's top order but there could be more work for the spinners such as Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay on a pitch which traditionally offers little for a pace attack.

Considering there were three ODI debutants in the New Zealand team in the opening game of the series in Dambulla, the Black Caps will turn up in Pallekele knowing that they have plenty of players who can perform to a higher level in this match.
Opening batters, Will Young and debutant Tim Robinson, impressed with a stand of 88 but there was precious little else from the experienced upper-middle order of Henry Nicholls, Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips who will all be desperate to contribute more in this game.
All-rounder Michael Bracewell finished unbeaten on 34 from 32 balls but we could well see a more attacking approach from him in this game as that is his usual batting style.
With the ball, Jacob Duffy will open the bowling but may find the wicket less responsive than in the opening game when he took 3/41.

According to the forecast, there could be some thunderstorms in and around the venue in the hours before the toss but currently it looks set to be dry throughout this ODI. The temperature is unlikely to drop below 23 degrees by the end of the match and will be as high as 31 degrees for the opening ten overs.

Pallekele is a wonderful venue to play international cricket but is one where the bowlers, particularly the pacers, have to work very hard for their wickets. It is usually a little easier for the spinners but overall it is a batter-friendly venue and we could well see team totals of 350+ in this game.
With each of the last four ODIs at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium won by the team batting second, we predict that both captains will go out for the toss wanting to bowl first in this game.
Sri Lanka got over the line comfortably in the end on Wednesday but in spite of their large total when batting, they did look under pressure when the New Zealand openers piled on the runs early on. We expect the Black Caps to be competitive once again in this match but with superior experience we are predicting a victory for Sri Lanka.
We are backing Sri Lanka to win!
