Although we are still early into this Marsh Cup campaign, it certainly looks like we could be in for a very close season. Victoria got off to a winning start but were pushed hard by Tasmania in a low-scoring contest whereas Queensland can count themselves unfortunate that the weather intervened after they made an impressive showing with the bat.
Neither state have a particularly impressive record in this tournament over the last 15 years but both have a strong mix of youth and experience whilst still missing some international players who are involved in the on-going tour of the UK for Australia.
Last season's head to heads saw contrasting games, both won by Victoria, but by margins of 19 runs and 9 wickets. In a season where the gap between the top and the bottom looks to have narrowed, we are expecting an exciting and close contest on Friday.

Even at 39 years old, Peter Siddle is still a handful to face and he comes into this game after picking up 2/26 in the opening Marsh Cup fixture against Tasmania. However, it was his young bowling team-mate Sam Elliott who was the star in that game, picking up the Player of the Match Award after taking 7/12 and then being at the crease to get the side over the line with 19 not out from 28 balls.
Victoria's middle order did not deliver against Tasmania and that is an area which skipper Will Sutherland will be desperate to see more from his side in this game. Josh Brown and Sam Harper are an explosive opening pair before the more traditional approaches of former internationals Marcus Harris and Peter Handscomb.
Overall, Victoria have plenty of players who can contribute to a win and spinner Todd Murphy will be looking forward to bowling on this pitch.

Queensland's batters showed a strong attacking approach in their 16 overs of batting in the reduced overs game which ended as a no-result with Tasmania last week. They hit 128/5 in those overs with international Matt Renshaw impressing at number three with a 36-ball 51. Alongside Renshaw, the opening pair of Ben McDermott and Max Bryant are both accomplished white ball batters and there are also plenty of runs to be had down the order from the likes of Michael Neser at number eight and Mark Steketee at number nine.
With the ball, Queensland have a strong trio of Neser, Steketee alongside the spin of skipper Swepson. However, between them they will only be able to bowl a maximum of 30 overs and there are question marks on the quality of where the other 20 overs will come from!

According to the forecast it will be a bright and sunny day in Melbourne, however, the temperature is unlikely to get over 16 degrees across the game. It could also be a little chilly at the start and finish of the match.
The Junction Oval has been synonymous with spinners over the years but with the advent of more attacking batting, it is now more associated with being a strong batting wicket. Whoever bats first will be looking to post a score of 300+ in this game.
With the sun likely to make the pitch better for batting as the game and day progresses, we predict that both teams will turn up to the Junction Oval wanting to bowl first and take advantage of any early assistance from the pitch.
Neither team will be at full strength for this game but, looking at the two squads, we expect Victoria to be the stronger side. Queensland have not won a game in this tournament since round two of last year's competition so we are predicting a victory for Victoria.
We are backing Victoria to win!
