Round 7 of Plunket Shield 2023-24 is here and we’re going to see Wellington Firebirds take on Otago Volts in an intriguing encounter.

One team has everything to play for, whereas another team has pride to restore and confidence to gain before the end of the season. A great opportunity to narrow the gap with the leaders Northern Knights would inspire Wellington to come out all guns blazing. With 67 points from 6 matches, they’re 14 points shy of displacing Northern Districts from the top. Seeing that the Firebirds play ND in their last fixture this season, any result other than a win against Otago in the penultimate match will be disappointing.

The Volts, after a torrid start to the season, have finally managed a win. Not an ordinary win but a thumping win over a strong contender Canterbury, and they’ll come into this match with their tails up.

Wellington Firebirds Preview

The Wellington Firebirds sit handsomely on the second spot on the points table — just 13 points shy of table-toppers Northern Knights. Both teams have not lost a match yet, but ND is at the top courtesy the extra win they’ve managed. Wellington has racked up three wins so far through some dominant performances that saw them win big by over 120+ runs.

They’ve played out three draws so far, but these draws won’t go down as missed opportunities to grab some more points and close the gap with the table-topper. On several occasions, especially in their most recent encounter against Central Districts at Fitzherbert Park, Wellington were in trouble. They were staring at an innings defeat but managed to stave it off in the end as weather intervened at the right time for them to come out unscathed.

With two matches to go, Wellington needs to bring out their A game to narrow the gap with the table-topper and give them a run for their money. Nick Kelly (550 runs from 6 appearances), Gareth Severin (471 runs from 6 appearances), and Muhammad Abbas (403 runs from 5 appearances) have scored the bulk of the runs for Wellington. Nathan Smith, 28 wickets from 6 matches, has been exceptional with the ball in hand, but sadly he hasn’t had much from other bowlers.

Wellington Firebirds Predicted Playing XI:

Tim Robinson, Nick Greenwood, Gareth Severin, Nick Kelly (c), Muhammad Abbas, Callum McLachlan (wk), Logan van Beek, Jesse Tashkoff, Peter Younghusband, Michael Snedden, Ian Meake.

Otago Volts Preview

The Volts haven’t been able to quite set things on fire in Plunket Shield this season. Six matches in, they’ve just managed to pick up one win. It came a little too late but nevertheless a win is a win. Even though it doesn’t help their cause of advancing to the top of the tree, it was much needed given their struggles this season.

Three losses, including an innings defeat, pretty much puts into context how significant their recent home victory over Canterbury Kings was. No doubt, they’d head into this encounter with their confidence sky-high, looking to prove their mettle and get another taste of success against a much better opposition -- Wellington. Jacob Duffy, with 29 wickets from 6 games, has had a terrific run with the ball in hand for the Otago Volts.

Luke Georgenson, with nearly half his tally, 14 wickets from 6 games, was an able ally to the strike bowler in their home win against the Kings. With 292 runs from 6 games, he’s quashed any doubts over his ability as an all-rounder, too.

Also among the runs for Otago are Dale Phillips (411 runs from 6 games) and Max Chu (371 runs from 6 games), but it's concerning that none of them have been able to score big daddy hundreds.

Otago Volts Predicted Playing XI:

Jacob Cumming, Luke Georgeson, Dean Foxcroft (c), Dale Phillips, Max Chu (wk), Llew Johnson, Jamal Todd, Ben Lockrose, Travis Muller, Jacob Duffy, Jarrod McKay.

Weather Conditions

The weather forecast looks good for the first two days with conditions expected to be warm and pleasant. Wet and gloomy weather is on the cards for most part of the third day, and it might slowly improve heading into the fourth. Not a highscoring venue, and bowlers get a bit of a better purchase here than other grounds, so batsmen beware.

WELL vs OV Pitch Report

This match will be played at the Basin Reserve, Wellington. Runs have been hard to come by here, with teams being routed for less than 200 four times. Only once has 300 been breached here this season when the hosts put 325 on the board against Canterbury in late October.

Toss: To Bat

Teams batting first have had a definite advantage here, so whichever team ends up winning the toss would be hoping to bat first and bat big by making best use of the conditions on offer.

Although Wellington is better-placed on the table, Otago might run the home team close in this game. But we think it won’t be enough and Wellington should prevail in the end.

We are backing Wellington Firebirds as winners of this contest.
