Hampshire had a tough run in the 2024 T20 Blast, managing just four wins from 14 matches and finishing seventh. They’ll be eager to turn that around this season, and starting with a win would go a long way in setting the tone.
To make that happen, the batters need to bring more to the table. Toby Albert will be in focus again after finishing among their top scorers last season. Another name to keep an eye on is captain Ben Brown, who’s been in decent form in the county championship.
They’ve added some fresh talent to the squad, too. Dewald Brevis, the exciting young South African batter, has ed the side and could give the lineup some real punch. He stood out in the IPL recently, scoring 225 runs in six matches for CSK, with a strike rate of 180 and an average of 37.50.
Also ing the squad is 19-year-old Lhuan-dre Pretorius, another promising player from South Africa.
With the ball, Hampshire will once again look to John Turner and James Fuller, both of whom led the wicket charts for the team last year. Brad Wheal and Liam Dawson add further depth to the bowling attack.

Essex put together a respectable season last year, coming away with seven wins and six losses from their 14 matches. With the 2024 core still intact, they look well-placed to push for a spot in the knockouts this time around.
Michael Pepper will once again be at the heart of their batting. He was among the most consistent performers last season, piling up 535 runs in 13 innings. His average of 44.58 and blistering strike rate of 194 made him one of the toughest batters to contain.
At the top, Essex have the seasoned Dean Elgar and Adam Rossington, both of whom delivered over 300 runs last season and gave the team strong starts more often than not.
Charlie Allison and Paul Walter are likely to be steadying influences in the middle order, known for their measured, tactical approach to building an innings.
In the bowling department, Paul Walter will again shoulder a lot of responsibility alongside Matt Critchley. The duo took a combined 31 wickets in the 2024 T20 Blast and will be central to Essex’s attack. Adding to that, they’ve got Mohammad Amir in the mix now. The experienced Pakistani left-armer knows how to get results in English conditions and could be a real difference-maker this season.
(Note: At this point, Essex's captain for the T20 Blast 2025 hasn't been officially announced).

The Rose Bowl in Southampton offers a true pitch with good carry for pacers early on and consistent bounce throughout. Batters can trust the surface once set, but timing is important due to its slightly larger boundaries. Spin can play a role as the game progresses. Dew often comes into play in night matches, making chasing a preferred option under lights. Expect a balanced contest between bat and ball.
The weather in Southampton is expected to be cloudy and pleasant, but there’s very little chance of rain, so we should get a full match.
The average score batting first in the Rose Bowl in domestic T20s is 162. The highest total posted at the venue is Hampshire’s 221-3 versus Kent in the T20 Blast 2022. Aiming for something in the 180-190 range would give either side a decent shot at defending.
Chasing tends to work better in Southampton. In last year’s T20 Blast, teams batting second won four out of seven matches at this venue.
The T20 Blast is a long haul, and a solid start can make a big difference. Hampshire and Essex both know the value of getting that first win on the board. In a format as unpredictable as T20, momentum can swing fast—just a few overs can change everything. That said, if you break down both lineups and weigh their strengths and gaps, Essex come across as the more rounded unit. Backing them to get the job done seems like the more reliable option.
We are backing Essex as the winners of this match.
