A win in the final fixture of the group stages could have put Quetta Gladiators in the top-two, condemning the now table-toppers Multan Sultans to the much-dreaded playoffs. But it wasn’t to be.
Sultans, in fact, were too good for Gladiators, and completed a crushing 79-run victory to seal their berth at the top of the tree. Quetta Gladiators now take on the Islamabad United who pulled off an unbelievable 229-run chase against Sultans to wrap up their group stage fixtures. With United needing 48 runs off 4 overs for a win and a potential place in the playoff, Imad Wasim played a blinder to get his team over the line on the very last ball of the match.
Gladiators got the better of United at Lahore early on this season, while rain intervened in their Rawalpindi fixture. As the overall head to head (9-9) suggests, their encounters have always been close and fiercely contested. Given their form and their performances this season, it looks like this eliminator will not be any different.

Despite a brilliant win over defending champs on the opening night, United could not muster another win until their fifth fixture.
Their attempt to defend less-than-par totals against Sultans in the second match and Gladiators in the third ended in vain. Chasing 202 for victory in their fourth match against Zalmi, United batsmen showed better intent and game awareness and were ahead of the chase until the 18th over. But they still found a way to lose, eventually falling short by 8 runs.
With a place in the knockouts under threat, they realized the door was shutting on them and backed it up with brilliant performances with bat and ball. Leaving aside the abandoned match, they won 4 of their remaining fixtures to finish third on the table. Their chasing game has been on point, with them mowing down teams successfully twice – one against defending champs Lahore Qalandars and another against Multan Sultans.
However, they’ve struggled a bit when asked to bat first. Perhaps, it could be a combination of factors at play: lack of clarity as to what could be a good score on the strip and failure to suss out the conditions on offer. Batting is clearly their strong area with Colin Munro, Shadab Khan and Agha Salman all in-form, while bowling-wise they have a lot to improve especially with Naseem Shah and Shadab Khan still looking scratchy.

3 wins in 3 matches to kick off the season gave Quetta Gladiators a great launchpad to power their way thru to the playoffs. Their campaign, somehow, lost steam along the way, and their momentum stalled. All they could manage was just 2 wins in their remaining 7 fixtures.
From being level with table-topping Multan Sultans on points at the halfway stage to getting trounced by Sultans in the last group stage fixture with just three points added to their overall tally in the second half, it has been a bumpy ride on a rough surface for team Quetta so far.
Their spin-heavy attack hasn’t been able to keep up their level of consistency, and the pacers are still out of their depth. And this has allowed the opposition to get away and post a total beyond the reach of Gladiators’ inconsistent batting unit. Apart from the brilliant counterattacking 60* he made against Lahore Qalandars, Khafaja Nafay has been ordinary.
What’s interesting is his lean tally of 177 runs from 9 games is enough for a third place on the list of top run-getters for Quetta this season right behind Jason Roy (252 runs from 9 hits) and Saud Shakeel (323 runs from 9 games). The middle order is under fire for not scoring heavily with Rilee Rossouw, the captain, himself a big disappointment.

The Karachi decks have been hard to score runs on, so any score above 185 would prove to be a challenge for the chasing team. Anything less would be hard to defend, even though it’s a knockout match and there would be enormous scoreboard pressure on the chasing team. The forecast suggests the weather would hold up well for the big match.

Minimal TurnThis match will be played at the National Stadium, Karachi. Team Quetta has won two of their three matches here this season, while Islamabad United has a spotless record, winning its only match here against the local team Karachi Kings. United has an impressive showing last season, too, winning all three matches convincingly including one against Gladiators.
Four of Islamabad United’s five wins came while chasing, and it’s no surprise what they’ll fancy doing in the eliminator. Quetta Gladiators have tasted more success chasing down teams, so they’ll want to put the opposition in to bat if the toss goes their way.
Two drubbings while chasing big scores has exposed the chinks in the armour of Quetta Gladiators batting, whereas Islamabad United’s strikers are in great nick chasing down humungous targets against classy sides. Purely, on batting form, Islamabad United will win this fixture and go into the second eliminator
