Caribbean's most anticipated league L was back yesterday with a final ball thriller. It was St Kitts and Nevis Patriots who prevailed over the final ball thriller with a one-wicket win over Antigua and Barbados Falcons. They will play their next game against last year’s finalist Trinbago Knight Riders. The third game of the season will be played at Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts on 1st September from 4:30 am onwards.
In the first game of the L 2024, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots faced Antigua and Barbados Falcons at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua. Bowling first, SKNP restricted the Falcons to 163 runs for the loss of four wickets. Ashmead Ned, Tabrez Shamsi, and Anrich Nortje took a wicket each. Kyle Myers's 39 off 24 balls kept the chase alive for SKNP with 53 runs needed in the last 38 balls. The tail-enders then scored the required 7 runs in the final over of the game to their season’s start with a win.
As the new season kicks off, the Knight Riders are poised to make another strong push for the title. After a bitter defeat in the previous season's championship, the team is raring to go, fueled by a burning desire for redemption. Their last championship triumph came in 2020, a season where they showcased their dominance by going undefeated. With Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine still in the squad, skipper Kieron Pollard will be fueled up to touch the trophy for the fifth time.
Both teams have played in the last season at the same venue. Batting first, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots scored 178 runs after a half-century from skipper Sherfane Rutherford (62 off 38) in the middle. Sunil Narine (3) & Dwayne Bravo (2) were the only wicket-takers from TKR. Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard, and Andre Russell made the chase look easy by hitting at a strike rate of above 200. TKR won the game by 6 wickets with 17 balls in hand.

A thrilling start in the first game of the season has raised the hopes of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to go for the silverware. But it has also raised the question of the middle-order issues for them. Evin Lewis will open the innings with Andre Fletcher. Lewis, who scored 29 runs in the first innings, has 2460 runs in 94 L innings at a strike rate of 142.03. He also holds the record for the highest number of sixes in L (183). While Smith scored 27 off 19 which kept the chances alive. Drakes will come at number even as an ideal hitter. Drake’s strike rate i above 135 and he has also taken 28 wickets in 28 innings with the ball.
Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Ashmead Nedd will lead the bowling unit. Both Nedd and Nortje are yet to get into the zone of L. The duo took a wicket each with an economy of 6.25. Shamsi will be the bowler to watch out for. He has 42 wickets in 31 innings at an economy of less than 7.
